In the first six months of 2025, Vietnam exported over 14,000 tons of frozen durian, three times higher than the same period last year. This is a positive result following the signing of the protocol that allowed the export of frozen durian to China at the end of 2024.
Frozen durian offers significant advantages: it can be preserved for 6–12 months, meets quarantine requirements, and ensures food safety. Many domestic enterprises have invested in deep-freezing technology and modern cold storage systems to seize this opportunity.
However, fresh durian is still facing challenges as many shipments have been flagged by China due to excessive levels of heavy metals (particularly cadmium) and chemicals.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has taken action with several measures:
Increasing inspections of soil, water, and fertilizer quality in growing regions.
Expanding laboratories that meet GACC (General Administration of Customs of China) standards.
Digitizing plantation and packaging facility codes to ensure clear traceability.
From July 12–17, a delegation of Chinese experts will visit Vietnam for on-site inspections, raising high hopes for a strong recovery in fresh durian exports. With the strong growth of frozen products, combined with stricter quality control, Vietnamese durian is seizing a major opportunity to establish its position on the global fruit export map.
